What is "Greensawn" timber?
Greensawn timber is timber which has generally come straight off the saw from log form. By definition greensawn is unseasoned timber defined as having a moisture content above 15%. Almost all large end section sawn timber is greensawn as its not economical nor quick to remove the moisture from such large pieces. Greensawn is perfect for structural external applications where small amounts of naturally shrinkage is acceptable. Simple steps such as oversize bolt holes, shrinkage allowance in joints, end grain sealing & nail plating will all help to ensure your greensawn timber performs how it should.
What is "seasoned" timber?
By definition seasoned timber has a moisture content of less than 15%. This can be achieved by either air drying or kiln drying. Air drying is very slow and imperfect whereas kiln drying is faster and more controllable. Our kiln dried products are dried to "furniture grade" timber moisture content 10-12% as required by joiners & furniture makers.
